  • Why is Taiwanese oolong tea considered premium?
Taiwanese oolong tea, particularly those grown in high mountain regions like Lishan and Alishan, are prized for their unique flavour profiles, delicate aroma, and exceptional quality resulting from the island's optimal climate and soil conditions. Taiwanese oolong tea often commands a higher price due to several factors: High Altitude Cultivation: Grown at elevated altitudes, Taiwanese oolong tea benefits from a slower growth rate, enhancing its flavors and unique characteristics. However, this requires labor-intensive methods and results in higher operational costs. Limited Harvests: Taiwanese tea plants undergo fewer harvests annually due to the region's unique climate conditions. This scarcity makes each batch of tea more exclusive and commands a higher price. Quality and Craftsmanship: Taiwanese tea producers are renowned for their meticulous attention to detail and traditional craftsmanship. The harvesting, processing, and roasting of Taiwanese oolong tea require exceptional skill and expertise, contributing to its premium status. Demand and Reputation: With its exceptional quality and distinct flavor profiles, Taiwanese oolong tea has gained global acclaim. The high demand, coupled with limited supply, further elevates its price, making it a sought-after choice among tea enthusiasts worldwide.

  • I had never tried an oolong tea from Taiwan, what price point or where should I start?
Tea, much like wine and coffee, offers a diverse range of tastes and flavours to satisfy every palate. You don't have to break the bank to enjoy a great cup! Various factors influence the price of tea, including production costs, harvest frequency, quantity, and rarity. For instance, our premium Lishan oolong undergoes cultivation in high-altitude and remote mountain regions, incurring higher operational costs such as transportation and staffing. With only three harvests per year due to the climate, production costs are further elevated. Despite these challenges, the result is a tea of exceptional quality and flavor, reflecting the care and dedication of those involved in its production. At Formosa Tea Co., we are dedicated to sourcing the highest quality tea at every price point. Each of our teas undergoes rigorous tasting standards to ensure refined quality and flavour.
  • What is the shelf life of your teas?
Our teas are carefully packaged to maintain their freshness and flavour. When unopened and vacuum-sealed, they can be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and will maintain their quality for at least 2 years. Once opened, the tea is best enjoyed within the first 14 days. While some customers may take longer to finish their tea, it’s important to store it properly and minimise exposure to moisture and air (oxygen) to preserve its quality. This is similar to other products like coffee or wine. For customers who order a tea caddy, we provide a bag sealer to help seal the open bag more effectively. However, please continue to follow the recommended storage guidelines to ensure the best results. Instruction for Using the Sealer
  • Are your teas organic?
While not all of our teas are officially certified organic, we prioritise sourcing teas that are grown using sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices. We partner with like-minded tea producers who are committed to sustainability. Whether certified or not, they place great value on sustainable agriculture, using only organic fertilisers and avoiding harmful chemicals. They choose to forgo the cheaper option of herbicides, relying instead on manual weeding, even though this labour accounts for half of their annual expenses. It’s impossible to produce top-notch tea buds when the soil ecosystem is damaged by chemicals that destroy beneficial microorganisms, reduce soil fertility, and harm soil structure. By prioritising these sustainable methods, we ensure our teas deliver exceptional quality while protecting the environment for future generations.
  • What is your Cost per Cuppa?
We are committed to providing high-quality tea that’s both delicious and great value for money. The cost per cup is an estimated cost based on the minimum standard of the following brewing method. Here's the breakdown: Brewing Guide: Using 5 grams of loose leaf tea to brew a 250ml cup. Multiple Steeps: You can steep the same 5 grams of tea leaves at least three times, yielding 750ml of tea (3 cups of 250ml each). Cost Calculation: For a 75g pack priced at £11.95, this translates to 45 cups of tea, making the cost approximately £0.27 per cup (£11.95 ÷ 45 cups). The cost per cuppa for our teas starts at about £0.27, making it an economical choice for enjoying premium loose tea. This estimate may vary based on your personal brewing preferences and the number of times you steep the leaves.

  • How do I brew oolong tea?
Brewing oolong tea is an art form! We always recommend using freshly boiled water, around 95-100°C. Experimenting with different brewing times and temperatures will help you find your perfect cup. Here are some popular guidelines for tea and water ratios: For a hot mug: Use a ratio of 1:50, and steep the tea leaves for 2-4 minutes for the best flavour. For cold brew: Use a ratio of 1:100, overnight in the fridge for 8 hours or more. For advanced brewing: Use a ratio of 1:15 to 1:30. This method is often used over 6 brews or more. (High mountain tea is best with 100°C boiling hot water and gaiwans or porcelain) Owing to the premium quality and rich content of our tea leaves, they can be brewed multiple times, allowing you to extract their essence repeatedly until no more flavour is released. Please note that our recommendations, including brewing notes for each tea, are provided as a reference only. Feel free to experiment and brew them in the way that you enjoy the most.
  • Why is the type of water important for brewing tea?
The quality of water can significantly affect the taste, aroma, and appearance of your tea. Pure water allows the true flavour of the tea leaves to shine through, while water with high levels of minerals or impurities can mask or alter the tea's natural characteristics. Based on official academic research, medium hardness is ideal for tea brewing. Hardness refers to the concentration of calcium and magnesium in the water. Water that is too hard can cause the tea to taste flat or overly mineralised, while too soft water can lack the necessary minerals to bring out the tea’s full flavour profile. TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids, which measures the concentration of minerals, salts, and other dissolved substances in water. For brewing tea, we recommend a TDS level of 50-150 mg/L. This range ensures the water is pure enough to highlight the tea's flavours without being so mineral-rich that it alters the taste. In summary: Recommended TDS: 50-150 mg/L Recommended Hardness: Medium (not too soft, not too hard) 6.5<pH<7 If your local water doesn’t meet the recommended TDS and hardness levels, using bottled water as suggested above is the best alternative. Alternatively, you can use a water filter designed to balance mineral content and reduce impurities. We suggest using bottled water brands such as: Waitrose Essential Still Natural Mineral Water (5L) These brands have been chosen for their suitable mineral content and quality, ensuring a balanced and pure water source for brewing tea. If your tea tastes unusually flat, metallic, or overly bitter, it may be due to the water quality. Experimenting with different types of water, such as the recommended bottled waters, can help you determine if water quality is affecting your tea’s flavour.
  • Why loose teas over tea bags?
We exclusively offer all our teas in loose leaf form. Opting for loose leaf tea not only enhances the drinking experience but also provides the most straightforward way to minimise over-packaging and single-use waste. With our premium quality loose teas, you can brew the tea at least three times, instead of the typical single brew tea bag. Loose tea leaves can be disposed of in your normal kitchen waste in most areas in the UK. While many tea bags are marketed as biodegradable or made from compostable plastics (e.g. PLA - polylactic acid and NatureFlex, etc.), they actually require specific conditions and industrial processes to biodegrade effectively. Unfortunately, due to a lack of suitable infrastructure for composting or industrial composting in the UK, these compostable tea bags cannot be recycled and cannot break down in standard landfill conditions.
  • Sustainable cultivation
We prioritise sourcing teas that are grown using sustainable and environmentally-friendly practices. All our tea producers follow organic farming methods, though they may not all be officially certified. Each of our tea products is also sourced from single estates, ensuring quality and preventing mixtures from unknown sources. In addition, all the teas are sourced from award-winning estates known for their high-quality produce. They follow the best practices recommended by the Tea and Beverage Research Station in Taiwan — an official institute with over 120 years of experience leading the advancement of the science and technology of tea and beverage production in Taiwan. This ensures the continued excellence and competitiveness of Taiwanese tea products in the global market.
